Spooked Kooks Lazy Dasiy Softboard review by The South Coast Kook

Updated: Feb 1, 2023

My aim is to review boards and products for the average knockabout surfer (or ‘kook’ like me), without all the technical terms and manoeuvres.

When I found out that ‘Spooked Kooks’ was releasing a new model, I just knew I had to get one to review. If you aren't too familiar with ‘Spooked Kooks’ they are the company behind environmentally friendly Softboards. They achieve this because all the hard plastics in their boards are made from 100% recycled post-consumer plastic waste. This includes the ‘Eco slick’, leash plug, fins and fin key.

I absolutely dig the colours that all the ‘Spooked Kooks’ boards come in, and with their latest model ‘The Lazy Daisy’ they kept the fun going by having colours such as Almost Grey, Dusty Pink and Aqua Green. I grabbed an Almost Grey one and was stoked when I unboxed it and saw the colour in real life for the first time.

‘Spooked Kooks’ absolutely nailed the brief about whom they suggested the recommended rider is for the ‘Lazy Daisy’. This is for the laid-back beginner looking for an easy entry into the world of surfing. Here’s how.

The ‘Lazy Dasiy’s’ size run is perfect for the majority of frothers on their learn-to-surf journey. It comes in 8 Ft and 7 Ft. I personally reckon 8ft is the perfect size for adults, with the 7 ft size covering the Groms.

The benefit to the 8ft size for adults is that you will never outgrow this size either. (This is something I get asked a lot when it comes to buying your first board). As once you have the fundamentals of surfing down pat, 8 ft is the perfect length to use as a log for those small waves days.

The ‘Lazy dazy’ comes with the standard thruster set up which I find heaps more beneficial for a learner surfer than a single fin as this creates a more stable base under the back foot and gives the rider an experience of learning to turn easier.

The only downside to the thruster for this size board is that you can't really move your feet too far up the board to try and nose ride because you will lose traction, I was fine with this knowing that this board is designed for beginners and the most enjoyable part is catching heaps of waves surfing it from the backend anyway.

A must-do is to grab a leg rope and wax at the checkout. I usually steer clear of the add-ons because companies try to trick you with below-average accessories, but not ‘Spooked Kooks’. Their legrope are of very high quality. I would have loved to direct you at this point to my online store to buy a legrope to go with this board but there is no need for ‘Spooked Kooks’ have nailed it.

The ‘Lazy Daisy’ comes with a Futures fin box system which Is an added bonus if you feel the need to upgrade your fins down the track. Even though the recycled fins that come with the board definitely do an amazing job but knowing that your new board can take high-quality fins in the future is a great thing to keep in the back of your mind.

I got my hands on the ‘Lazy Daisy’ at the perfect time as there was a brief pause in the swell. I had so much fun experimenting with finless surfing and seeing how small of a ripple I could catch. If you are an experienced surfer who is looking for a board for the learners in your life at least you know there is some fun in it for you!

If you didn't know, ‘Spooked kooks’ now has a ‘learn to surf’ section on their website. There is a whole stack of high-quality videos to help new punters with everything they need to know from ‘How to set up your new board’ to techniques in the water.

The ‘Lazy Daisy’ retails at $569.95 and it's great knowing you are doing your part for the environment.

Reach out to me if you have any questions you might have on this board or any other boards I have reviewed.
